Is Your Pool Leaking or Just Evaporating? The DIY "Bucket Test"
It's the most common panic call we get: "I'm adding water to my pool every other day. Do I have a leak?"
Before you spend hundreds of dollars on a professional leak detection service, there is a simple, scientifically proven test you can do yourself for free. It's called the Bucket Test, and it determines once and for all if your water loss is due to a crack in the pipes or just the hot Florida sun.
Evaporation vs. Leaks
In Ormond Beach and Daytona, it is normal for an uncovered pool to lose about 1/4 inch of water per day due to evaporation. This can increase to 1/2 inch on windy, dry days.
However, if you are losing more than 2 inches per week, you likely have a leak. The Bucket Test works by comparing the evaporation rate of the pool water to a control sample (the bucket).
How to Perform the Bucket Test
Fill the Bucket
Fill a standard 5-gallon bucket with pool water about 3-4 inches from the top. Place the bucket on the first or second step of your pool. The bucket needs to be immersed in the pool water (without floating away) so that the water inside the bucket stays the same temperature as the pool.
Mark the Levels
Use a piece of electrical tape or a permanent marker to mark the water level inside the bucket. Then, mark the pool water level on the outside of the bucket.
Wait 24 Hours
Turn off your auto-fill valve if you have one. Let the pool run its normal cycle. Do not swim or splash water out. Wait exactly 24 hours.
Compare the Loss
Measure how much the water dropped inside the bucket vs. outside the bucket.
- If both dropped the same amount: It is evaporation. You do not have a leak.
- If the pool level (outside) dropped MORE than the bucket (inside): You have a leak.
I Have a Leak. Now What?
If the test confirms a leak, the next step is to determine where. Common culprits include:
- • The Skimmer: Cracks often form where the plastic skimmer meets the concrete pool wall.
- • The Light Niche: The conduit behind your pool light is a common leak source.
- • Equipment Pad: Check for puddles around your pump and filter while the system is running.
Don't let a small leak turn into a sinkhole. Professional leak detection uses specialized listening devices and pressure testing to pinpoint the exact location without digging up your whole deck.
